Our schools serve the finest youngsters in New York State. They excel in academics, inter-scholastic athletics, drama, art and music. They’re model student citizens, participating actively in school and civic affairs and volunteering within the community in countless ways. During the past two years our graduates have gone on to distinguished colleges and universities including Siena College, New York University, Harvard University, Boston College, Hofstra University, Villanova University, Elmira College, American University, and two year and four year SUNY colleges and universities across the state. Our athletic teams are very competitive -- often divisional and sometimes sectional champions. Two members of the Class of 2009 will be attending Division I Universities on athletic scholarships. Twenty eight clubs and activities are available for students in elementary, middle and senior high. Few small rural districts can boast the academic programs and resources that Sullivan West has. Our high school offers eight Advanced Placement courses, five Dual Credit courses with Sullivan County Community College, and both the Syracuse University Chemistry and the Rochester Institute of Technology pre-engineering programs (Project Lead the Way). Of the 110 students in the Class of 2009, 25% took three or more AP courses during their junior and senior years. Many students prepare for careers or for technical post-secondary education by studying Career and Technical Education at the Sullivan County BOCES located in the nearby village of Liberty. Our distinguished faculty and staff work with students in small and personal classes. (We try to limit all class sections in grades preK-3 to fewer than 18 students.) Students who need extra help or special programs are served by a dedicated school services staff including guidance counselors in grades 7-12, social workers, psychologists and special education teachers in each school. We enroll approximately 10% of our k-12 students in summer school, providing them opportunities to strengthen skills and recover credits that may have been “lost” during the regular school year. The Sullivan West Central School District is positioned between the Catskill high peaks to the east and the Delaware River Valley that forms our western boundary. Ours is an area of rare and quiet natural beauty, containing some of the finest golf, fishing, hunting, hiking, and skiing in America. And yet, we’re hardly isolated or insulated. New York City is only 90 miles away. And our School District is home to fine music, art, museums, and first-class restaurants. The 1969 Woodstock Festival occurred in the Town of Bethel, one of the eight towns served by the Sullivan West schools. Today this site is home to one of the finest summer-long music festivals in the nation, hosting the Boston Pops and New York Philharmonic, as well as pop, jazz, rock and country shows and acts. At other venues within our community you’ll find chamber music, summer opera, and even old time fiddlers groups. The Sullivan West Central School District provides an excellent education for its students within a small-town, rural community setting. Its schools are great places for students, faculty and staff. Maybe this is explains why Sullivan West graduates are so successful.
